Ex­hi­bi­tion and events in Saint Peter’s ex­plores autism spec­trum

An ex­hi­bi­tion next month fea­tures Stu­art Neil­son who lec­tures and writes about the autis­tic spec­trum as a health statis­ti­cian, and also from his per­sonal per­spec­tive of an Asperger syn­drome di­ag­no­sis in 2009, at the age of 45.

His ex­hi­bi­tion of im­ages and words is in St Peter’s Gallery, Cork next month. Named Cre­at­ing Autism, it ex­plores pro­cesses that shape autis­tic iden­tity and the por­trayal of autism in a shared lan­guage, me­dia, and pub­lic spa­ces. The im­ages use news­pa­per cover­age, med­i­cal text­books, autis­tic au­to­bi­og­ra­phy and film as raw ma­te­rial for anal­y­sis, along with video from around Cork City.

It opens on Thurs­day, Fe­bru­ary 7, at 6pm with a panel dis­cus­sion, and runs un­til Wed­nes­day, F br ary 27. There are ad­di­tional talks with Q&A ses­sions on two Satur­days, Fe­bru­ary 9 and 16.
