Ensure that you give dry cows a good quality precalver mineral for a sufficient period before their due date. January calvers will need supplementation with minerals from the end of November onwards.

If you had issues this spring, are different minerals required?

Ask these questions now! Group dry cows according to body condition at housing, and feed them accordingly. If you are happy with body condition, grouping cows according to calving date will make management much easier around calving time. Get autumn born calves off to the best possible start by introducing a good quality creep feed, if it is possible to do so once they head indoors. Don’t stock pens too heavily, to avoid bullying of fresh cows and injury to young calves.
