This week’s pic­ture from our ar­chives shows Min­is­ter for In­dus­try and Com­merce Sean Le­mass at Bal­li­na­mult, Co Water­ford to switch on the elec­tric­ity for the lo­cal cream­ery, which be­came the 100,000th con­sumer of the Ru­ral Elec­trifi- cation Scheme.

Also in the pic­ture are par­ish priest Fr Peter F Walsh and RF Browne, Chair­man of the ESB. A to­tal of 310 premises were con­nected at Bal­li­na­mult. The cream­ery was set up in 1895, the sec­ond co-op­er­a­tive cream­ery in Co Water­ford, it later be­came the Knock­meal Co-op.

Af­ter be­ing placed in re­ceiver­ship in 1975, Knock­meal be­came the fifth co-op ab­sorbed into the new Water­ford Co-op­er­a­tive So­ci­ety.
