This week’s picture from our archives shows Minister for Industry and Commerce Sean Lemass at Ballinamult, Co Waterford to switch on the electricity for the local creamery, which became the 100,000th consumer of the Rural Electrifi- cation Scheme.
Also in the picture are parish priest Fr Peter F Walsh and RF Browne, Chairman of the ESB. A total of 310 premises were connected at Ballinamult. The creamery was set up in 1895, the second co-operative creamery in Co Waterford, it later became the Knockmeal Co-op.
After being placed in receivership in 1975, Knockmeal became the fifth co-op absorbed into the new Waterford Co-operative Society.
