Busting myths

Irish Examiner - Feelgood - - Ageing With Attitude -

Natural Causes: Life, Death and the Illusion of Control, by Barbara Ehrenreich, €12.97 The American author, a political activist who describes herself as “a myth buster by trade” reveals in her book that she is now open to dying at age 76. Rather than this being a negative death-wish, however, she uses it as a platform to tackle the wellness and medical world, arguing that it promotes money–making routine “rituals” of unnecessarily poking, scanning and needling our bodies to keep our fears of dying at bay. Ehrenreich — who holds a PhD in cellular immunology — applies scientific rigour to her arguments as well as personal detail regarding her own attempts at healthy longevity.
