IF you feel you are going through a stressful stage of your life, then you may be one of the rising numbers in Ireland suffering from heartburn discomfort. The number of sufferers of the condition has doubled in Ireland since 2016, with over a third of adults here now affected, according to research carried out by Pfizer Ireland to launch Heartburn Awareness Week which returns for its fourth year, October 8–14. Symptoms such as burning pain in the chest and throat, unpleasant taste, bloating, feeling sick or bad breath, are occurring daily or at least twice a week for 30% of sufferers, according to the research, which also found that 59% say that symptoms of heartburn are directly linked to stress in their lives. This year, Heartburn Awareness Week is advising the public to speak to their pharmacist and find a remedy to best treat the common ailment, including avoiding the daily triggers that contribute to it.
