Trish Lane, director of clinical services, UPMC Whitfield, Waterford 7.30am I drop my daughter Tara to secondary school, and my son Evan to work en route to the hospital, which is a short commute from our home in Waterford. 8.10am I meet with the assistant director of nursing and the director of quality and patient safety to ensure everything went well overnight and that all is running smoothly. We regularly have patients arrive ahead of time so admissions is very busy in the mornings. We have a mixture of inpatients and day cases and our busiest specialties are orthopaedics — mainly hip and knee replacement — and ophthalmology (eye surgery), as well as gynaecology and hernia repair. Our patients like that they can have their treatment close to home and don’t have to travel miles to Dublin or Cork. 9am The director of quality and safety and I meet the clinical director to discuss learning opportunities that arise from patient feedback. I liaise with all the department heads on a daily basis as I’m responsible for making sure they function smoothly. 11am I head to the radiotherapy unit where I meet a clinical specialist radiotherapist. We review the patient pathway, from admission to discharge, to see if we can tweak it for improvements. Previously, UMPC ran the radiotherapy unit but since they took over the entire hospital earlier this year, we have more resources and more innovation across the joint campus. We have more than 50 consultants and 70 beds. 12pm I have a sandwich on the run before heading to another meeting where directors of nursing from public and private hospitals in the region meet to discuss how student nurses are faring. The meeting is chaired by Waterford Institute of Technology which has a clinical placement co-ordinator, responsible for allocating the student nurses. We review outcomes for the students to ensure their placements are meeting the college criteria. 3pm I have a meeting on IT software. We plan to introduce a system that will allow us do pre-admissions online. Many patients require multiple episodes of care, so it will help streamline appointments. Our focus is on elective surgery. My background is in surgery. Prior to joining UMPC Whitfield, I worked as a theatre supervisor at University Hospital Waterford. 6pm Ballroom dancing, waltz and jive, fill my downtime. I also love going on holidays.
