THE PARK’S FAMOUS GUESTS
The Park has welcomed many famous visitors over the years, including actors Alec Guinness and John Mills.
Staff member Margaret O’Leary remembers that when Charlie
Chaplin visited with his wife Oona, their three young children insisted on sliding down the bannisters of the hotel’s great staircase.
Staff also remember how Princess Grace and Prince
Rainier were refreshingly unstarry when they stayed and showed no airs and graces. They dined with other guests and made no requests for special menus or security.
And hotel staff had to use their tact and diplomacy when dealing with an inebriated Brendan Behan. Having ordered a bottle of whiskey and soda water at breakfast, Behan became very drunk as the day went on and by that night the police were sent for.
However Anne O’Donoghue Tuohy kept the literary great chatting, encouraged him to remove his tie and boots, and to have a lie down. Within moments Behan was sound asleep and there was no need for the intervention of Gardai.
