■ The beans and peas will soon be groan­ing un­der their yields – check sup­ports and ties.

■ Early peas and mangetout are ready for har­vest

■ Con­tinue to earth up pota­toes. Some early va­ri­eties may be ready to har­vest.

■ Now is the time to re­move side shoots from your tomato plants (ex­cept bush va­ri­ety) to trig­ger bet­ter fruits and har­vest.

■ Con­tinue to suc­ces­sion sow­ing salad crops but think of a lit­tle shade for the next batches as in hot­ter weather they can bolt or bit­ter up.

■ Win­ter cab­bage re­quires a long sea­son – start now for seed. Like­wise with kale.

■ Rhubarb stems are ripe and tasty right now and their nor­mally dis­carded fo­liage makes a great aphid spray.

■ All those net­tles too bit­ter for the eat­ing are per­fect picks for liq­uid feeds — high in iron and ni­tro­gen.

■ Take a trip to Ir­ish seed savers to see their stun­ning col­lec­tion of her­itage apple trees or or­der one on­line.
