Fiann’s tips for the weekend
■ The beans and peas will soon be groaning under their yields – check supports and ties.
■ Early peas and mangetout are ready for harvest
■ Continue to earth up potatoes. Some early varieties may be ready to harvest.
■ Now is the time to remove side shoots from your tomato plants (except bush variety) to trigger better fruits and harvest.
■ Continue to succession sowing salad crops but think of a little shade for the next batches as in hotter weather they can bolt or bitter up.
■ Winter cabbage requires a long season – start now for seed. Likewise with kale.
■ Rhubarb stems are ripe and tasty right now and their normally discarded foliage makes a great aphid spray.
■ All those nettles too bitter for the eating are perfect picks for liquid feeds — high in iron and nitrogen.
■ Take a trip to Irish seed savers to see their stunning collection of heritage apple trees or order one online.
