Life in the country
Trish Dromey reports on a beautiful dwelling with attractive views of the Bandon Valley
With extra spacious living space, stables, Bandon valley views and an acre of land, Curranure near Innishannon, Co Cork, has much that could persuade a Cork city family to take a leap of faith and move to the country.
Originally an old stone farmhouse , it been turned into a comfortable modern fivebed house with 5,500sq ft of accommodation spread over three floors. Carrying out the renovations in 2006, the current owners kept the footprint and the thick stone walls of the original property but extended at one side and at the rear. A small section of exposed stone wall at the front is now probably the only indication that this isn’t a totally new property.
Timber-panelled ceilings on the ground floor give the rooms a little of the original farmhouse look but it is a thoroughly modern home with timber and tiled flooring, under-floor heating and en suite bedrooms. The owners have also added two balconies from which they can look out on the wooded hillside at the rear.
Given the size of the property it’s not surprising that it has some exceptionally large rooms including a 27ft long dining room at one end and a similarly long sitting room at the other. The timber-floored dining room/ living room has a spiral staircase going down to the basement and up to the first floor. Alongside it’s a marble tiled kitchen / breakfast room which has extensive white shaker style units, black marble counter tops with integrated Baumatic appliances as well a centre island.
To give it a little of the flavour of a farmhouse kitchen the owners have put in an Aga and feature stone alcove with a timber surround. Next to the kitchen is a marbletiled family room or study with a wroughtiron fireplace. Alongside it, at the end of the house, is an extra long timber-floored sitting room which has a fireplace with a stove. To the rear at ground level the owners added a fifth bedroom/gym and a corridor running the full length of the property with a balcony. In the basement level at the rear, the property has a utility room a wet room and a storage area.
On the first floor an extension at the side was used to create a large en suite bathroom with a Jacuzzi as well as a walk-in wardrobe for the master bedroom. To the spacious 20ft by 16ft carpeted bedroom they also added a balcony with countryside views and provided it with access, via the spiral staircase, to the living room below it.
On this level, there is also a bathroom with a clawfoot bathtub in addition to three timber-floored bedrooms, all with en suites.
As a nod towards the property’s origins , one of the bedrooms has an antique-style wrought-iron fireplace.
In the landscaped one-acre site the property has courtyard garden at the front, a patio with a BBQ at the side and an extensive lawns at the rear. At the other side is a courtyard and a stable block with 11 units which was built by previous owners.
Overlooking the Bandon valley, Curranure is situated at a popular spot for walkers who can chose between woodland paths, hill walking or following the old railway line.
Located 2km from Innishannon and 21km from Wilton, it’s a 20 to 25 minute commute from the city.
