“My best festival memory, the one forever etched in my memory is Dawn Run winning the Gold Cup in 1986. I was only 15, I was riding on the flat at the time as an apprentice but I saw what did for Ireland. Ireland was on its knees then — it didn’t have any money — but that was such a good story, it almost lifted the whole country. It opened the news that night and, for me, after that, that was the race I wanted to win more than any other. And it was purely because of that day. I was lucky: I did (on See More Business in 1999). You have to consider what a great race that was as well, the horses she beat to win. And for Jonjo O’Neill as well, I was lucky enough to ride a lot of winners for him, I know him very well so, for me, that’s the one. It doesn’t get any bigger than winning the Gold Cup.”
