Northern Trust kickstarts Fedex playoffs
Today, the Northern Trust Open will kick-start the Fedexcup Playoffs, a race that will determine the season-long champion on the PGA Tour. The four playoff events will offer $32m (€27.6m) in prize money, meaning a total of $67m (€57.8m) is on the line over the four weeks of Fedexcup Playoff competition.
The top 125 in the Fedexcup standings are eligible for The Northern Trust, with the top 100 advancing to next week’s Dell Technologies Championship at TPC Boston. Then, 70 players will compete in the BMW Championship at historic Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.
The playoffs field will be pared to 30 for the season finale, the Tour Championship at Atlanta’s East Lake Golf Club on September 20-23. While every player in the TOUR Championship field can still win the Fedexcup, the top five in the standings can clinch the cup with a win at East Lake.
Fedexcup points are quadrupled in the playoffs, meaning any player within the top 125 can make a Cinderella run, but the players at the top of the leaderboard still have the advantage. Fed Ex Cup rankings: 1. D Johnson, 2. J Thomas, 3. B Koepka, 4. J Rose, 5. B Watson,
