There is plenty in Cork to entice you
With its new African section boasting lions and tigers, many children will want to start their adventure in the Rebel County at Fota Wildlife Park.
The park near Cobh has expanded hugely in recent years and has a whole host of animals on show, from screeching gibbons to loveable penguins - and don’t forget a trip to the hothouse to see butterflies and other tropical guests.
While you’re in the area, drop into Fota House and Gardens next door - an ideal place to take a picnic.
Kids may also enjoy trip on the train up to Cobh, which has a large playground and a museum marking the final Titanic journey from the port more than a century ago.
Other family attractions in Cork include Leahy’s Open Farm in Dungourney, East Cork, which boasts lots of animals and other attractions.
There’s a barrel train ride, an indoor play barn, crazy golf, an adventure trail and go-karts. It is open every day from 11am to 6pm from April to September.
Rumley’s Open Farm in Waterfall, just a few minutes from the city, will also suit children who adore getting up close and personal to animals.
Activities there include zip wire, mini-golf, go- karts, and a soccer area with goal posts.
Families can take day trips to Trabolgan Holiday Village, located on 140 acres beside the sea near Midleton.
It has a host of indoor and outdoor activities for energetic kids and teens, including combat laser, abseiling, go karting and zip-wiring. There’s also an indoor sub-Tropical swimming pool complex with panoramic views of the Atlantic and a wave machine.
Head to Clonakilty to marvel at the famous West Cork Model Railway Village, where the models and figurines are handmade to a scale of 1:24. A great day out for young and old.
Families also flock to the Donkey Sanctuary in Liscarroll, North Cork, which has taken in over 5,200 donkeys rescued from all parts of the country. Visitors are welcome to visit and meet all of the beautiful donkeys, foals and mules.
