Kevin Kennedy, Anu Dairy
Kevin Kennedy may not be a farmer but as CEO of Anu Dairy, works hand in hand with local dairy farmers to produce Anu Organic Butter rich in Vitamin K2.
“The company is a year old,” says Kevin, “started last May, part of the SOS Ventures 90- day bio- tech accelerator programme. I have been working with [ farmer] Sean Condon, in Limerick, with the Little Milk Company and we also worked with [farmer] Dan Ahern, in Cork. We produce organic butter rich in a Vitamin K2, a form of vitamin k and the vitamin k2 moves calcium away from your arteries and puts it in your bones. Some dairy would have k2 in it but our level is higher than anyone else through a mix of soil management techniques and working with the farmer. Our soil is organic and extremely healthy, we have a better species bio-diversity in the grass which appears to help produce more k2 and that’s part of our research, understanding how that happens. We were happy that we hit our research milestones as part of the accelerator. We a listing with Supervalu. It is currently made by Moorepark Technologies but we’re seeking a manufacturing partner for a larger scale. It is specifically designed as an export product, notably for Germany and the US. There is a limited amount of money that people will spend on organic produce in Ireland — we are selling in Ireland, but we won’t make a substantial amount in Ireland. Farmers going down the added-value route need to tell their story, it is just documentation, using photos and video to share with the wider world, via social media primarily.”
