Beauty resolutions take tenacity, deep breathing, and sometimes a little stardust, writes Rachel Marie Walsh

ew behaviour takes at least two months to become automatic, according to a 2009 University College London study published in the European Journal of Social Psychology, so if your New Year’s Resolutions are kept until March you’ll probably be getting somewhere. Beauty products and supplements often require the same kind of tenacity to make a difference, which isn’t helpful when you’ve got somewhere special to go this weekend. For this reason, my beauty resolutions are just as much about feeling better as looking it, no matter your route.

Lighten sun spots without lasers

This time last year I was all excited about bakuchiol, the antioxidant that works like retinol but without the increased dryness or sensitivity. It is still awesome, collagen-building stuff 12 months on but let’s kick off 2020 with a great new weapon in the fight against UV damage. The Inkey List Tranexamic Acid Night Treatment, €18.20, is available from January 11 at cultbeauty.co.uk.

Recent research on tranexamic acid shows an ability to interrupt processes in the skin that cause discolouration, provided you apply it regularly for 2-3 months. The Inkey Lists’ appealingly affordable formula teams it with plenty of vitamin C (ascorbyl glucoside), which is well known for its capacity to lighten dark spots and brighten dull skin. The formula also contains other potent antioxidants, including acai berry extract. It comes in an opaque, pump bottle that helps keep the formula stable. The product dispenses as a gel that thins out and absorbs quickly. It works for all skin types and is most effective when you protect skin from UV rays in the daytime.

Glow away the January blues

A limited-edition new year’s launch from NARS gives foundation a golden, orange-free glow without streaks. Their Tinted Glow Booster, €39, on counters nationwide from January 9, is customisable complexion enhancer that smooths skin’s appearance by visibly blurring imperfections and enhancing its natural texture. Formulated with skin- tone coloured pearls to help brighten and illuminate skin for a filtered look, the lightweight liquid can be worn alone, under foundation, or as natural illumination on the high points of the face. Hydration is immediate and long-term with NARS’ lightweight blend of jojoba extracts. Available in four shades, Tinted Glow Booster adds a pretty glow and a softfocus effect to skin while extending the wear of makeup for up to 16 hours.

A glamorous yet versatile palette of nude and gold metallics is a similarly mood-boosting, as well as wearable year-round. Try Dior’s limitededition 5 Couleurs Happy 2020 Palette, €63 at Brown Thomas, which includes a black that doubles as powder liner, as well as oyster silver, champagne and shimmery chocolate.

Ditch your false lashes

Mascaras are what Maybelline does best, their range is the budget equivalent of sister- brand Lancôme’s red carpet-worthy formulas. I think their magic is in the wands.

The Falsies Lash Lift, €11.95, at pharmacies nationwide from next week, has an amazing double-curved lifting brush that grabs every lash at the root and lifts it, creating a false lash strip-like fan. The fibre-infused formula bulks them up and extends them. The formula is not waterproof but it does wear well all day if you can avoid rain and tears. It’s worth a try for the price and may well inspire you to give up products that cost more, too.

Get fuller lips overnight (without fillers)

Toofaced’s best-selling Hangover skincare range is expanding to include Hangover Pillow Balm, €21.86 +shipping at toofaced.com from January 12, a new plumping night treatment for lips. This luxuriously rich and creamy balm is infused with a blend of minerals sourced from real falling stars (!) as well as a nourishing complex of fruit oils, conditioning butters, and hyaluronic acid for pillowy soft, ultra-hydrated, replenished lips.

The rich and cushiony texture glides comfortably over lips, creating a protective barrier that prevents lips from drying. The soft pink balm goes on clear and is also infused with the Hangover range’s signature coconut water and probiotic ingredients. The look of lines on lips is minimised while the fine skin is soothed and conditioned.

Try Transcendental Meditation (TM)

The lifestyle factors that contribute to premature ageing — stress, sugar, smoking, sun, and lack of sleep — are 80% avoidable in my view. Stress — that final fifth— floods your immune system with cortisol, exacerbating eczema, acne, rosacea, and contributing to the breakdowns of natural substances in skin that keep you looking dewy and rested. You cannot totally cut stress out of your life and still have a life. Instant cures like wine — while wonderful — can also cause inflammation and dehydration in the short term, as well as enlarged capillaries and diminished collagen over time. Healthy skin is not the only reason to make meditation part of your life but it is a great one. We are often driven to positive life changes by a little vanity but forcing yourself to be silent, to take a personal inventory, and breath, benefits your entire being, your skin is just the visible benefactor. I recommend transcendental meditation only because I find it has the most profound effect (post-yoga meditation never really made me a believer). It also takes little time, just 20 minutes twice a day, and with practice can be done almost anywhere. Search tm-ireland.org for your nearest class.
