PICK OF THE DAY
Back From The Brink
RTÉ One, 6.30pm
Derek Mooney narrates a documentary about individual conservation projects that’s also being broadcast in six other European countries. The Irish strand focuses on attempts to reintroduce the red kit, a bird of prey that disappeared in this country by the end of the 19th century.
We see how a new population in Wicklow is gradually spreading to other countries. Other featured projects include the Italian wolf, back from the brink of extinction; the brown bears of Spain; and the Eurasian Lynx in Slovenia. We also see an incredible rewilding project in the Caingorms, Scotland — often held up as an example of what could be achieved in parts of Ireland – which has involved collaboration between landowners, government and conservation charities.
