Church no longer has hold over State

‘Please just make it stop’ — Simon Harris responds to Bishop’s contraception comments, ( Irish Examiner, online, August 5). Minister Simon Harris’ tweet “Please get that!” to Bishop Kevin Doran, that the church does not set “health and social policy in our country any more” is a healthy sign that Ireland is regaining the ground lost over the decades when Church and State functioned hand in glove. The minister’s thoughtful response to the call of Bishop Doran’s effort to bring back the contraceptive ban is quite consistent with Spike Milligan’s thoughtful reflection that: “Contraceptives should be used on every conceivable occasion.”

It is good government policy and good sexual practice for all.
