Man exposed himself to children
A Louth man repeatedly caught with child pornography over the past decade has been jailed for six years for this crime and for exposing himself to children on their way to school. Barry Watters, aged 42, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to two counts of indecency in Dublin City in December 2014, and possession of child pornography at Middle Abbey St, Dublin, on October 20, 2016.
Watters, formerly of Infirmary Rd, Dublin and originally from Dundalk, Co Louth, has six previous convictions, mainly for possession of child pornography.
Watters was caught for the 2016 offence by gardaí who had spotted him entering an internet cafe and were able to remotely monitor what he was viewing on the computer.
At a sentence hearing in July, Detective Garda Brendan Lynn told the court a number of children on their way to school observed Watters with his penis exposed in December 2014. Watters was arrested and the children were spoken to by specialist interviewers.
Judge Martina Baxter yesterday accepted that a report handed to her suggested Watters had cognitive deficits and was on the autism spectrum scale. She imposed a seven-year jail term in consecutive sentences, with the final 12 months suspended for two years on strict conditions.
