Man ex­posed him­self to chil­dren

A Louth man re­peat­edly caught with child pornog­ra­phy over the past decade has been jailed for six years for this crime and for ex­pos­ing him­self to chil­dren on their way to school. Barry Wat­ters, aged 42, pleaded guilty at Dublin Cir­cuit Crim­i­nal Court to two counts of in­de­cency in Dublin City in De­cem­ber 2014, and possession of child pornog­ra­phy at Mid­dle Abbey St, Dublin, on Oc­to­ber 20, 2016.

Wat­ters, for­merly of In­fir­mary Rd, Dublin and orig­i­nally from Dun­dalk, Co Louth, has six pre­vi­ous con­vic­tions, mainly for possession of child pornog­ra­phy.

Wat­ters was caught for the 2016 of­fence by gar­daí who had spot­ted him en­ter­ing an in­ter­net cafe and were able to re­motely mon­i­tor what he was view­ing on the com­puter.

At a sen­tence hear­ing in July, De­tec­tive Garda Bren­dan Lynn told the court a num­ber of chil­dren on their way to school ob­served Wat­ters with his pe­nis ex­posed in De­cem­ber 2014. Wat­ters was ar­rested and the chil­dren were spo­ken to by spe­cial­ist in­ter­view­ers.

Judge Martina Bax­ter yesterday ac­cepted that a re­port handed to her sug­gested Wat­ters had cog­ni­tive deficits and was on the autism spec­trum scale. She im­posed a seven-year jail term in con­sec­u­tive sen­tences, with the fi­nal 12 months sus­pended for two years on strict con­di­tions.
