Academic hip-hop journal to be unveiled


The first academic journal on hip-hop will launch in June as part of a €2m, five-year research project on the spread and influence of hip-hop music. It is part of a University College Cork project, aided by a grant from the EU.

As part of the project, an internatio­nal search for the defining gems of hip-hop is also being undertaken.

Hip-hop fans will be asked to name their top five acts, tracks, and gems of knowledge, with the academic team behind the study exploring trends, symbols, and cultural significan­ce, charting the spread of hip-hop all over the world.
