20 Irish Examiner Tuesday, 4.08.2020 Sport Tregoning confirms QEII ‘main target’ for Mohaather Foret on Arc de Triomphe weekend is too close to the QEII. “His end-of-season target will be the QEII,” said Tregoning. “Whether something slots in before that we’re not sure yet, but Ascot is his main target. “We could have really done with the Marois being a week later than it is. There isn’t anything that slots in ideally, as the Marois is the 16th (of August) which is a bit quick and if we drop down to seven for the Foret it’s too close to Champions Day. “With the races all moved around it’s difficult. At least we’re now looking having won a Group One, given how we felt after Royal Ascot things are a good bit different.” Ascot may not be his final outing of the season, though, as Tregoning went on: “The Breeders’ Cup is three weeks after Ascot this year so that would give him enough time, but that would be entirely down to Sheikh Hamdan. He is lightly raced so hopefully we’ll get a few more goes with him.” Tregoning only had seven runners at Goodwood and was rewarded with two winners and two seconds. His other winner was the juvenile, Alkumait, another colt by Showcasing. “I think he’s a horse that improved massively for his first run and he could be a nice horse,” he said. “The Gimcrack is not off the radar so we’ll just see how he is. I wouldn’t want to run him on firm ground at this stage of his career as I wouldn’t want to jar him up.” Meanwhile, racing at Yarmouth was abandoned yesterday following three races due to concerns over a false patch of ground. There was a nasty incident in the third race on the card, division two of the Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 Handicap, as Lord Chapelfield sadly broke down, catapulting jockey Gabriele Malune into the ground. Maulne was attended to on the track for some time, before being taken to hospital for further assessment, while a deputation of jockeys subsequently inspected the turf with officials including clerk of the course Richard Aldous. Aldous said: “The jockeys were concerned about the mark the horse made when he fell. They felt that the course wasn’t fit. You have got to respect their opinion as they are the ones riding on it. We will now have a look at the course and take it from there. We will have a further look at the course this evening and tomorrow to see where we are at ahead of the meeting that is scheduled to take place on Friday. “I think it was a unanimous decision by the jockeys and you have to respect that. It was terrible to see. Gabriele has gone to the James Paget Hospital in Gorleston for further assessment. He was awake and talking upon leaving the track.” He added: “Of course it is always disappointing to call a meeting off midway through, but the safety of our participants must come first.” PJ McDonald was one of the riders to check the ground, and he said: “We found a patch of ground that was easier to move, with inconsistent ground underneath. We couldn’t tell if that was on a patch where they hadn’t raced yet, so we had to do the right thing and cancel the meeting.” Nick Robson Mohaather’s main aim for the remainder of the season is the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on British Champions Day, with Marcus Tregoning still weighing up a possible suitable option before it. Given the Ascot showpiece is not until October 17, Tregoning would prefer his stable star to have an outing beforehand following his scintillating success in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood. But the handler fears the Prix Jacques le Marois on Sunday week may come too soon, while the Prix de la Miss Amulet keeps Condon smiling Longclaw delivers for Elliott Naas report well-timed challenge to get the better of odds-on favourite and Epsom Derby third Amhran Na Bhfiann. The application of blinkers seems to have worked the oracle for Giorgio Vasari, who is now two from two in the headgear having been beaten favourite on his first two outings. Aidan O’Brien’s Air Force Blue colt made all. Blinkers also worked well for Nullifier, who claimed his first win of the season by taking the Naas Handicap. Being drawn low, against the far rails, appeared to be the right place to be and Gary Carroll’s mount was prominent throughout, never left the inside position, and stayed on well to lead a furlong and a half out. The winner stayed well to win a shade cosily, with Blairmayne catching the eye in fourth having had no luck in running late on. “We thought he would have won like that before now, but the blinkers worked a treat,” said Carroll. “The last furlong was a long one because he was pulling up for most of it.” Niall Egan saddled his first winner just a fortnight ago and doubled his tally when Theoneyouare made light of her rivals in the first division of the Inpho Photography Handicap. A close fifth behind Starlite Dancer in Cork on her previous turf start, she became the third winner to come from that race, Caesar’s Comet and Lady Scathach (twice) having previously given it a boost. In the second division, Denis Hogan was confident of a big run from Hell Left Loose and the four-year-old, having his second run for the stable, justified that confidence with game effort to get the better of Improving, with the luckless Teddy Boy in third. He provided a lucky 13th winner of the season for jockey Joe Doyle. Simply True was quite well fancied to win the Naas Racecourse Apprentice Handicap and Mikey Sheehy gave Andy Oliver’s horse a fine ride to land the spoils. Well-backed favourite Lord Park held every chance but the winner, who went on early in the straight, kept going all the way to win well. Tommy Lyons Roscommon report Ken Condon’s fantastic season with his two-yearolds got even better at Naas when Miss Amulet got up late to win the listed Arqana Irish EBF Marwell Stakes with something to spare. Odds-on favourite Frenetic set out to make all and, for much of the trip, looked like doing so. The winner, on the other hand, was caught in a pocket a furlong out and Billy Lee had to work hard to extricate his mount from that position. Once out, the Cork maiden winner quickened up stylishly to get on top late for an ultimately cosy success. It was Condon’s 10th winner of the season, two of which are Group 2s, and it could get better in the coming days as Teresa Mendoza, who is held in the highest regard, holds an entry in the Group 3 Silver Flash Stakes on Thursday at Leopardstown. Lee said: “I travelled lovely all the way. We went nice and quick. She might get six (furlongs) but at the moment my filly feels like a proper five-furlong filly. She has plenty of gears. “We were caught in a pocket for a while and I had to wait for a gap to appear but, to be fair to her, when it did appear and I asked her to go about her business she battled well to get out of it and quickened then when I wanted her to and won snug at the line. “She’s progressing, and getting bigger and stronger, and Ken will probably look for something in Group company for her now.” Bounce The Blues was a well-backed second-favourite for the Baroda Stud Fillies’ & Mares’ Maiden as punters once again looked to oppose So Wonderful, and the support for Johnny Feane’s filly proved well founded as Gavin Ryan brought her through late to win with a degree of authority. It was a 21st winner for the young rider since the return of racing and 22 was not long in coming as he took the following race, the Nursery Of Champions Maiden, aboard the Dermot Weld-trained Zawara. Ryan took his time early and brought her with a Tommy Lyons As is customary, Roscommon played host to the first 3YO hurdle of the year and victory went to Longclaw, trained by Gordon Elliott. A horse who was with Elliott before switching to America and then back to the Co Meath trainer, he had disappointed on his two previous starts on the flat this season but clearly enjoyed the switch of codes. He travelled sweetly this time, jumped well and, when Jeff Kidder made a mistake at the last, he was left to coast clear. Elliott topped and tailed the card by taking the finale, the Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands Bumper, with the Jamie Codd-ridden Papal Lodge. Third to stablemate Mr Jackman on last month’s racing debut, he showed the benefit of the experience when battling on to deny the game Meet And Greet. The complexion of the Dysart Maiden Hurdle changed when leader Broomfields Jeremy fell at the second-last, and that left Jacksons Gold to take full advantage. Trained by Alice Curran, Dungarvan, it was a welcome winner for Ian Power, who is back in the saddle after a long spell in retirement — his last winner was eight years ago. William Of Wykeham added to his recent Ballinrobe Maiden Hurdle success when continuing Mark McNiff’s fine run with a nice performance in the Class Grass Handicap Hurdle. Western Victory had a straightforward task in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Mares’ Beginners’ Chase and she made the most of it. Sean O’Keeffe, for whom it was a 10th winner of the season, made all aboard Declan Queally’s mare and she only had to be kept up to her work to account for Rapid Response. Got Trumped foiled a gamble on Konitho in the Boyle Beginners’ Chase. The winner looked in trouble as the runner-up jumped upsides at the last, but he dug deep to prevail. Denis O’Regan gave Brian McMahon’s Warreedy a beautiful ride to win the Castlerea Handicap Chase. The 14-1 chance, who was pulled up on his only previous outing for the stable, in October, appreciated the quiet ride, and moved up easily to collar long-time leader Rudy Catrail late on. Steel Bull to be supplemented for Phoenix “I’ll see how he is, but all going well he’ll be supplemented for the Phoenix Stakes,” said O’Callaghan. “He’s come out of Goodwood very well. He had a couple of easy days when he got home, but he was bouncing again quite quickly. He’s a horse with a great constitution and he’s a great ‘grubber’. “We’ll be stepping up to six furlongs, but given he relaxes so well in his races and settles, I can’t see him having any problems at the trip. “When he won his maiden at Naas I had the Phoenix in my head straight away as he ran through the line strongly that day.” Nick Robson Michael O’Callaghan’s impressive Molecomb Stakes winner Steel Bull will be supplemented for the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday. It will be a first run over six furlongs for the speedy colt, who has won both his races to date in impressive fashion. Steel Bull overcame a tricky passage at Goodwood to win in fine style, and O’Callaghan hopes he is the horse he can make his breakthrough with at the highest level.
