Monamores up for global gong

-

THE Monamore herd of Tom Kelly and his son James, at Philipstown Farm, Drogheda is the only Irish herd in the 100 herds worldwide which have been nominated in the search to find the world’s most influential breeders of the last 25 years.

The Monamore herd received a Diamond award for Monamore Bwm Ellymae ET and a Gold award for Monamore Bwm Ellymae ET.

The contest is being organised by Holstein International magazine to identify the herds which, in the opinion of their readers, have made the greatest contribution in shaping the Holstein cow globally over the last quarter of a century.

Voting for the nominated herds, which is open to all readers of Holstein International, will close on Thursday.

The Monamore herd has been noted for the prizewinners and price-leaders bred over the decades, a number of which have been purchased by AI centres.

The Hall of Fame Award 2018 was presented to Richard Hamilton, of Gurteen Agricultural College, who was nominated by the Laois Offaly Club “in recognition of his dedication, help and support to all young members.

“He is always around to show his support for the club and keeping the club strong by introducing new members from the Gurteen College, as he always invites students along to the club events.

“He gives up plenty of his time to our club and it would be a real way to thank him for all the work he has put in over the years for the club show and Tullamore Show.

“He is a true asset to the club and he is a wholesome, genuine and engaging character.”

The award was presented to Richard by Peter Ging (chairman, IHFA) with Charles Gallagher (chief executive, IHFA).

The Carlow Kilkenny YMA Club was named the YMA Club of the Year in recognition of their participation and performance in the various YMA events and activities, and acknowledgement of their teamwork, cooperation and abundance of skills and talents among their members.
