Yesterday’s sale had 500 sheep on offer. The hogget trade was broadly similar to the previous week, but prices were €3-5/hd stronger in places.

Samples included eight 54kgs at €219/hd, ten 53kgs at €201/hd, twelve 50kgs at €196 and seven 56.5kgs at €225/hd.

Ten 47.5kgs averaged €168/ hd, with eight 45kgs making €168/hd.

The small entry of spring lambs included five 55kgs at €222/hd, a single at 50kgs €211 and three 46.5kg lambs €197/hd.

Cull ewes sold to a top of €217/hd while ewe with twins at foot made €360.

Roscrea

Last week’s entry of 500 sheep met a cracking trade.

The heavy hoggets included a top call of just over €4.00/ kg for 54kgs at €217/hd, with 63kgs hitting €219/hd, while 57kgs topped out at €205/hd.

Among the lighter lamb/ hogget 41-43kgs made €142146/hd, with 48kgs selling to €183/hd. Cull ewes mostly made €170-180/hd but the best price of the day was the €228 achieved for a 90kg cull.

Carnew

Numbers reached 1,826 with trade up by €5-7/hd.

The top call among the hoggets was the €217/hd paid for a pen of ten mixed 59kgs. Various batches at 61-62kg made €212/hd.

At the lighter end eleven 42kg sold for €165/hd while thirty-one 30kgs averaged €111/hd.

The first of Carnew’s spring lambs met a strong trade with 44kgs selling to €197/hd.

Cast ewes were also in demand, with eleven 78kgs making €183/kg and five 102kgs selling to €252/hd, while a single at 116kg made €284/hd

Headford

Trade here last week was very strong for hogget, with 53kgs topping out at €193-194/hd and 50kgs making up to €190/ hd. The top call among the heavier lots was the €200/hd paid for 62kgs.

Among the lighter lots 42kgs sold to €140/hd and 37kgs sold to €120/hd.
