Swimming (Warner Bros) HIP-HOP
He has quite a profile in his native US, but if the rapper is known at all on this side of the pond it’s down to his relationship with Ariana Grande. He and the pop star recently split and the demise of the relationship fuels the best songs on this fifth album. There’s swagger here and there, but Miller’s songs connect when revealing his vulnerability. Marc Bolan did more than most to popularise glam rock and none more so than on this startling debut — one of the most defining releases of the 1970s. The music is dirty and adventurous — much like the people who influenced Bolan and the fingerprints of producer Tony Visconti are all over it. Its cocksure attitude — and sound — would also colour another of the era’s great movements: punk.
