A victory for . . . what exactly?

-

The continuing calls for a complete cultural and economic boycott of all things Israel would be laughable if it weren’t so dangerous.

After all, when you consider that in the past the NUJ has called for a complete boycott of Israel, then you know you have just entered some weird and terrible terrain — a terrain where journalists, supposedly the most passionate defenders of free speech, are calling for a blackout of the only country in the entire region who can boast a free press.

And the latest example of this cultural fascism came with the news that the band Dervish were forced to cancel a visit to the country following a vile, hate- filled campaign against them on Facebook and the Twitter machine.

Apparently some pro- Palestinian groups took offence at the idea of the group going over there to do a couple of gigs and the usual Internet lynch mob soon mobilised their nasty little asses and hounded the band into submission.

Their decision has been greeted as “victory for democracy” in some circles, which seems, to put it politely, rather contradictory, while the usual suspects have been out saying that this is yet another blow against “the apartheid state of Israel”.

And you know what?

They have a point. Because only yesterday a tearful Bibi Netanyahu told

ispy: “That’s it, the game is up. I don’t want to be in charge of a country if Dervish cannot come and play here. What’s the point?

“As of tomorrow I am demolishing all new settlements and giving up all claims on Jerusalem. Maybe then Dervish will play for us.”
