Slow start for Galway clubs

GALWEGIANS have struggled to get going on their return to Division 1B of the Ulster Bank League and after the first block of games they lie seventh in the standings.

The Crowley Park outfit were relegated from Division 1A last season when they finished bottom of the standings.

Back in 1B they have only registered one victory so far this term, and with three defeats including last weekend’s disappointing 27-23 loss at home to the in-form UL Bohemians, they are well behind the early pacesetters in the battle to earn promotion back to the top tier.

On the other hand, Buccaneers continue their push towards promotion, and they have made a fantastic start to the season and they are second, just four points adrift of UL Bohs.

Buccaneers had a sensational 49-36 win at home to UCC last weekend, and with three wins from their opening four games they look best equipped to make it back into Division 1A next season.

In Division 2A, Corinthians are seventh in the standings with just one win from their first four games also.

Last weekend’s 29-9 heavy defeat at home at the hands of Cork side Highfield was a low point in their campaign to date, and they will need to bounce back if they want to join Galwegians and Buccaneers in the top tiers.

Sligo continue to struggle in Division 2C, where they dropped to seventh last weekend, with their third defeat of the season – they lost 26-25 in a thrilling game away to Bruff.

Their next game is at home to Rainey at Hamilton Park on October 29 and they will hope to push back up the table with a win there.
