Olympic spirit on view in Furbo

-

THE German architect Hermann Peltz was one of the brains behind the avant-garde design of Munich’s Olympic Stadium, built in 1972.

A little over a decade after that, Peltz was working on a smaller-scale project — though still putting his modernist eye to work — in designing what is now called West End House, at Knockanavoddy in Furbo, Co Galway.

The property was formerly known as Cedar Lodge, and ran as a bed & breakfast for some time. It last sold at a public auction two years ago, in April 2015, for €485,000, according to the Property Price Register. The new owners are now having to return to London for work, but not before having completely redecorated the house with new flooring, a new kitchen and landscaping.

The energy efficiency has been upgraded too, with triple-glazed windows and doors and the kind of energy rating — B3 — that had barely been dreamt of back when the house was built in the mid-1980s. It sprawls over 3,584 sq ft, though that includes an annexe by way of a self-contained apartment, reached from the house but with its own entrance as well.

There are five bedrooms in total, including one in the annex, with an en-suite and walk-in wardrobe. The master bedroom also has a walk-in wardrobe and an en-suite with a freestanding stone bath.

Back on the ground floor is an open-plan kitchen and dining room with doors to an elevated patio. Also on this level there’s a living room with a fireplace and a baywindowed sitting room, while the annex has a ground-floor kitchen and lounge.

It’s on a one-acre site with a patio and lawns and mature evergreens, and it’s about a 20-minute drive from Galway city centre or 10 minutes from Salthill.

West End House is for sale for €690k with Power & Associates (091) 567 331.
