Lohan and Moran take hurling rivalry to fairways
HURLING rivalries can often be fierce but former Clare great Brian Lohan and Limerick stalwart Ollie Moran are going one step further next month by taking the battle to the fairways of Spain’s Costa del Sol.
The former hurling stars will lead the charge as Clare take on Limerick for the inaugural playing of ‘The Shannon Airport Cup’ at La Cala Resort in what has been dubbed a Ryder Cupstyle golf trip with a difference.
Golf Voyager’s Fintan Ward recently announced that former Clare hurling captain and two-time All-Ireland Hurling Championship winner Lohan will captain a Clare team against a Limerick selection led by fellow All-Star Award and former Limerick hurling captain, Moran.
The trip will take place from November 18-21 with the golfing showdown confirmed for November 19-20.
Speaking at the launch, Conor Galvin CEO of Golf Voyager said: “There is an appetite for competitive team golf with a difference and bringing a hurling rivalry into the equation will certainly add to the excitement.”
The Shannon Airport Cup comprises a three-night stay at Sunset Beach Club in Benalmadena and includes breakfast, two rounds of golf at La Cala Golf Resort with airport/golf transfers, buggies and a commemorative polo shirt on arrival.
The format is a team of two, fourball betterball, which combines with the overall Clare Vs Limerick event.
There will be prizes, including golfing holidays, for the top 10 teams.
There are just 64 places available on the trip – 32 each for Clare and Limerick supporters – with bookings now being taken.
The trip costs €325 per person based on twin room sharing though flights are not included but are available with Ryanair from Shannon.
Golf Voyager is encouraging interested parties to call them before booking flights to ensure availability.
