THE castle that stood in the grounds of Kevit Castle is gone, as indeed is the Big House, which went by the name of Castle Cosby. It is said that Philip Smith, having made his fortune with the Pennsylvania railroad, returned to his native Cavan and bought the place in 1855, restoring its original Irish name. His descendants have lived in the demesne ever since. The house that’s there now was built in 1958 to a design by a Danish architect.
