‘Double Dutch’, Rogary, Milltown €395k ABBEY PROPERTY SALES, (071) 965 1734

CAVAN is famously said to have a lake for every day of the year, and you can stake your claim to one of them from ‘Double Dutch’, on the shores of Lough Ardan. Built 16 years ago by the current owners, it’s on five acres of splendid gardens with direct access to the lake and a jetty. As the name suggests, it consists of two properties. First is the main house, which has an open-plan sitting room and kitchen, one en-suite bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe, and another bathroom. The other property is a timber-clad two-storey Dutch-style structure consisting of a workshop or studio on the ground floor, and two bedrooms (one en-suite) and an office with kitchenette upstairs.

Lisduff, Virginia €550k SHERRY FITZGERALD DECLAN WOODS, (049) 438 0038

AS the very last house on an 800-metre rural cul-de-sac, this detached property in the townland of Bruise (or Bruse) could not be more secluded. For all that, though, it’s only a five-minute drive from the N3, which means you get from there to the Blanchardstown Interchange in about 45 minutes. The house is on 1.4 acres, with a tree-lined avenue leading up to it. Inside, it’s 3,423 sq ft on two storeys with an attic. The ground floor has a dual-aspect kitchen, a bay-windowed sitting room, a family room giving onto a deck, and a study or spare bedroom. The other four bedrooms are upstairs.

3 Drumeagle, Crosserlough €300k SHERRY FITZGERALD DECLAN WOODS, (049) 438 0038

HAVING been built only in 2015, this detached house about five kilometres from Crosserlough conforms to modern expectations regarding energy efficiency, and has a BER of A3. It’s on a quiet country road among a handful of other rural properties, and has an elevated spot from which to enjoy reasonably long views of the Cavan countryside. It’s 2,368 sq ft with four upstairs bedrooms (one en-suite). On the ground floor there’s a sitting room to the left of the entrance hall and a living room to the right. The kitchen is at the back and opens into a sunroom with doors to the garden. There’s also a detached garage on the grounds.

Kevit Castle, Crossdoney €1.4m GANLY WALTERS (01) 662 3255; PROPERTY PARTNERS QUINN (043) 334 6237

THE castle that stood in the grounds of Kevit Castle is gone, as indeed is the Big House, which went by the name of Castle Cosby. It is said that Philip Smith, having made his fortune with the Pennsylvania railroad, returned to his native Cavan and bought the place in 1855, restoring its original Irish name. His descendants have lived in the demesne ever since. The house that’s there now was built in 1958 to a design by a Danish architect. It’s 5,113 sq ft in a split-level layout, with four bedrooms, four reception rooms and three bathrooms. It’s on 164 acres and still has the old gate lodge at the entrance.
