Corinthians off to flying start

- Daragh Small

CORINTHIANS will look to keep up their impressive start to the season when they travel to take on City of Armagh at Palace Grounds in the Ulster Bank League Division 2A tomorrow.

The Tuam Road outfit had a brilliant 28-23 win away to Greystones in Dr Hickey Park last weekend. And that was a huge turnaround from Round 1 where Corinthians should have won, but succumbed to last-minute defeat against Queen’s University at Corinthian Park.

In 1A, Buccaneers have made a slow start to their first campaign back in the top tier in ten years, and they are still searching for their first win of the season when they welcome Young Munster to Dubarry Park this weekend.

In-form winger Rory O’Connor scored two tries while Alan Gaughan added the rest off the kicking tee. But after Buccaneers were level 10-10 at half-time in Dooradoyle last weekend they slipped to a 29-17 defeat against Garryowen. That came after their Round 1 defeat at home Lansdowne.

Galwegians also lost in Round 2, and host Blackrock College at Crowley Park tomorrow aiming to win their second game this season.

It was a surprise 26-10 loss at home to City of Armagh last time out and they will need to bounce back straight away to keep on top of their promotion drive.

In Division 2C, Sligo have made a dream start to their campaign and they are keeping up their brilliant form from last season ahead of their clash with Bruff at Killballyowen Park tomorrow.

Sligo secured a crucial bonuspoint 36-14 victory at home to Malahide last weekend and they are top of the fifth-tier standings ahead of Midleton and Omagh, but after just two games.
