A MAN was killed after he became trapped when a deep trench collapsed.
The man, in his 30s, was working at a premises at Rooves More in Coachford, Co Cork, when the tragedy happened just before 10am yesterday.
Emergency services were called to the scene and both gardaí and fire crews assisted with recovering the man.
The Heath and Safety Authority (HSA) has confirmed the man was working in the trench when it collapsed on him.
A HSA spokesman said that the man was killed in the incident and confirmed it will launch an investigation into the tragedy.
Gardaí are also investigating the incident under the Coroner’s Act.
Meanwhile, tributes have been paid to a student who passed away four days after suffering injuries in a fall at a house in Limerick
The 19-year-old Galway native, named locally as Sophie Coll, from Barna, had been studying at the University of Limerick when she fell in an off-campus property in Limerick.
Gardaí confirmed they were treating the tragedy as an accidental death.
Ms Coll was rushed by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick Intensive Care Unit, but sadly lost her battle for life on Wednesday.
UL chaplain Fr John Campion said he was “supporting” Ms Coll’s family in trying to come to terms with the tragedy. “We are supporting the family at this time, as well as [Sophie’s] classmates, and housemates, as part of our pastoral care protocol,” Fr Campion said.
