Baldwin gets bitten by Lion

-

RUGBY

WALES hooker Scott Baldwin was described as “pretty lucky” and “pretty stupid” after being bitten on the hand by a lion in Bloemfontein.

The incident happened at a game park prior to Ospreys’s Guinness PRO14 game against South African franchise Cheetahs, which the Welsh side lost 44-25, and the 29-year-old was taken to hospital to receive stitches and treatment against infection.

Coach Steve Tandy had no sympathy for his player. “There was an incident with a lion, but in fairness it was nothing to do with the lion,” he said. “He did bite Scott but when you put your hand in a fence where there is a lion, then you will get bitten.”

Meanwhile, Ireland will face South Africa today after yesterday’s 24-7 win over Chile in the Oktoberfest Sevens.

CYCLING

THIS weekend Ireland’s Killian Callaghan will be crowned world champion in the U-21 Enduro World Series following a sensational few months.

The Dublin man has raced consistently in each of the rounds, with a first place in Aspen, and second in Whistler, Canada, securing the overall series lead, leaving him unbeatable going into the final round in Italy today and tomorrow.

Although Callaghan is still only 20 years old, he started enduro racing four years ago after spending years on all kinds of bikes – from motorbikes to BMX racing.

GOLF

BRENDAN McCARROLL and David Carey both advanced to the second stage of the European Tour qualifying school after superb final rounds at Ribagolfe, Portugal.

McCarroll looked to have blown his chances of qualification after carding 75 in round three, but he saved his best until last with a stunning eight-under 64 to ease into the next round. Joining him will be Carey, who just scraped through after a four-under 68.

BOXING

TONY BELLEW and David Haye have agreed terms for a heavyweight rematch in December.

Bellew stepped up to heavyweight to beat former world champion Haye in London in March, but the fact Haye fought for five of their 11 rounds with a ruptured Achilles left more questions than answers.

There was plenty of bad blood between the pair in the build-up to the first fight and now, with Haye fit again, the pair will have a rematch at the 02 Arena on December 17.
