People urged to heed simple rules during cold snap
MOTORISTS, pedestrians and householders have been urged to follow simple rules to stay safe during the Arctic cold snap.
Householders have been told to ensure they have adequate fuel for heating, a store of drinking water in case pipes freeze and access to hot food and drinks.
People have also been asked to check on their elderly neighbours and anyone who may be vulnerable during the bitingly cold spell of weather this week.
This is to ensure they also have access to heating and hot food.
Pedestrians have been advised to dress warmly, ideally in layered clothing, and only to undertake journeys when it is safe to do so. Sensible footwear is also cautioned given the likelihood of treacherous conditions underfoot.
Motorists have been told to take extreme care given the threat of snow and black ice on many roads.
Drivers have been asked to slow down, allow extra distance to vehicles in front given extended braking distances in icy conditions and to ensure their vehicles have correct tyres, wipers and anti-freeze.
Motorists have also been urged to take heed of all weather warnings issued by Met Éireann and the Road Safety Authority this week – and to postpone all non-essential journeys if the weather conditions are challenging.
Anyone travelling is urged to ensure they have warm clothing for the journey as well as vital safety items including a torch and mobile phone.
