Wexford relief as Guiney avoids surgery on knee injury

WEXFORD hurling has been handed a significant boost after it emerged that Jack Guiney’s knee injury will not require surgery.

Guiney damaged the knee recently and didn’t feature in either the clash with Tipperary or in the win over Clare last weekend, leading to fears he may have to go under the knife.

However, the Rathnure man confirmed to the ‘Wexford People’ that he will only miss “a few weeks” with the injury. The news will come as a boost to manager Davy Fitzgerald who is already set to be without talisman Lee Chin for Sunday’s scheduled Allianz HL Division 1A clash with Kilkenny in Nowlan Park, where the Slaneysiders will seek their third successive win in league and championship over their great rivals.

Chin picked up a pelvic injury in last weekend’s clash with Clare and was forced from the action at half-time, where he was replaced by talented youngster Rory O’Connor. Fitzgerald is currently operating without the services of the likes of Eoin Moore and Simon Donohoe as Wexford have made a flying start to life back in the top f light.

They have won three of their first four games, losing only to Tipperary in Semple Stadium and have already secured their top-flight status for 2019 and will contest a league quarter-final.

Wexford’s clash with the Cats depends on the weather forecast with the GAA expected to announce a contingency plan tomorrow morning if it is deemed that the fixtures will not go ahead. As it stands, there is hurling action scheduled for every weekend up to the final on March 24.
