Sinn Féin
The party favours getting rid of the Eighth Amendment, but does not currently support allowing abortions without restriction up to 12 weeks.
Leader Mary Lou McDonald has said Sinn Féin will hold a special ard fheis before legislation on 12 weeks is brought to the Dáil.
The special party meeting is unlikely to happen before the referendum. With the overall Dáil arithmetic on 12 weeks quite tight, Sinn Féin’s numbers could swing any future vote in its favour if it changes its stance on the issue.
Peadar Tóibín and Carol Nolan oppose repeal and the 12 weeks proposal.
They may face disciplinary action if they defy the party in the Dáil. At present 21 Sinn Féin TDs favour repeal, but the party does not support 12 weeks.
