Getting hitched the Narnia way

- IAN O’DOHERTY

DON’T TELL THE BRIDE RTÉ 2, TONIGHT, 9.30PM

WEDDINGS can be tricky affairs at the times.

The stress, the tension, the sight of your father-inlaw-to-be scowling in the background and making throat-cutting gestures when he thinks nobody is looking (although that last example may be just my own experience) and the adrenaline can all combine to turn what is meant to be the happiest day of your life into a rather gruelling experience.

Throw in someone with, say, a Harry Potter fixation, and you have a recipe for disaster.

The Harry Potter theme featured in a recent episode of Don’t Tell The Bride (RTÉ 2, tonight, 9.30pm) and while everyone obviously wishes that couple the very best for the future, that would normally be the kind of behaviour that embroils the divorce lawyers.

There’s a similar air of fantastical literary extravagance to tonight’s proceedings when young couple, David and Conna, get hitched.

David is a Narnia fanatic and fancies a Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe themed wedding. Literally.

Yes, he actually wants a lion to be present at the nuptials, along with a wardrobe and, of course, a witch (I would make a mother-in-law joke there, but I’m in enough trouble as it is).

Not only that, but David also wants the fire brigade to be in attendance. Why stop there? Why not ask for the Army to deliver a 12-gun salute and get the Air Corps to do a flyover?

If Don’t Tell The Bride is about the end of a relationship, and the beginning of a marriage, First Dates Ireland (RTÉ 2, tomorrow, 9.30pm) takes us on the first, tentative steps in the search to find true love. Or get on the telly. It’s always hard to tell with most of the contestants.

Featured tonight is Pat O’Mahony, former presenter of RTÉ clothes show, Head 2 Toe.

An amiable enough chap, 50-something O’Mahony admits that he has never been in love or lived with anyone, so will tonight provide his lucky break?

A nation holds its breath...

There will be a rather surreal atmosphere going to Twickenham this Saturday. With the championship already in the bag, Ireland will be travelling in the knowledge that England have only one thing left to play for – denying us the Grand Slam.

That’s a rather pleasing reversal of the usual roles played by these teams and Daire O’Brien and guests will discuss that game, and Saturday’s victory over the Scots, on Against The Head (RTÉ 2, tonight, 8pm).

The rather patchy sci-fi anthology series, Electric Dreams (Channel 4, 10pm), has one of its more intriguing offerings with this tale of a girl who moves to a city obsessed with social media and terrorism.
