Doyle score decisive as Enniscorthy claim glory

-

ENNISCORTHY won the Towns Cup for the first time since 2015 when they proved too strong for holders Tullow in Wicklow yesterday.

Playing with the wind it looked as if the Wexford men were set for an easy win when David O’Dwyer and Ivan Jacob breached the Tullow defence for tries in the first quarter. Ivan Poole converted the first.

Tullow were under the cosh for most of the half but Enniscorthy didn’t make their superiority tell. Poole did kick a 34th-minute penalty but they should have been further ahead.

Just before the break Tullow got a lifeline when their pack demolished the opposition scrum to steal possession close to the Enniscorthy line.

Going through the phases Scott Caldbeck forced his way over and William Canavan converted to cut the gap to 15-7 at the break.

Despite enjoying the better of the exchanges in the second half Tullow couldn’t get themselves into good attacking positions until Canavan landed another penalty on 65 minutes. With 10 minutes to go he added another to reduce the margin to two points.

Enniscorthy responded and Nick Doyle eventually charged over. The difficult conversion was missed, which set up a tense finale.

Tullow went in search of a converted try but Enniscorthy held firm to seal their victory.
