Turning Coppers into pure theatrical gold

- Sean O’Grady

COPPER Face Jacks is getting the ‘Moulin Rouge treatment’ on stage after writer Paul Howard credited the nightclub as “an institution”.

A musical inspired by the Dublin venue is making its way to the capital’s Olympia Theatre, starring ‘Fair City’ actor Johnny Ward, ‘Red Rock’ actress Roseanna Purcell and singer Michele McGrath.

Speaking of his GAAplaying character, Ward said: “He hates Kerry people because of something that happened to him as a kid. Ironically, he falls in love with a Kerry girl a week before the All-Ireland final.”

They will be joined by several other actors on stage using puppets.

Howard first got the idea for the musical six years ago. “It’s no coincidence that so many relationships and marriages started in Copper Face Jacks.”
