A fine estate of affairs as Peugeot to roll out new 508 station wagon

- Eddie Cunningham

PEUGEOT has unveiled the estate (SW) version of its dramatically styled 508. It will be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October and go on sale here early next year.

It is a substantial vehicle – 1.42m tall and 4.78m long – and like the saloon it will have the latest generation i-Cockpit.

Families will be interested in the Magic Flat function, which allows you to fold back the two sides of the rear-bench seat. No wonder there is a total load space capacity of 1,780 litres. The boot itself accounts for 530 litres. It is also 70kg lighter thantheoldone.

There are two 1.6-litre petrols (180bhp and 225bhp) with the 8spd auto box. Four diesels are based on the 1.5-litre and 2-litre powerplants (130bhp manual, 130bhp, 160bhp and 180bhp autos). There is the option of a new 8spd automatic transmission with electric gear lever.

Later in 2019 there will be a plug-in hybrid petrol with a claimed electric-only range of 50km (WLTP). Peugeot says the batteries will be under the rear seats, so the boot’s space is not affected. Prices and specs nearer launch.
