‘Play your part’ by cutting shower time down to just four minutes

- Ian Begley

IRISH people should take four-minute showers in a bid to help conserve water supplies during drought-like conditions.

Global Action Plan Ireland, the national charity environmental organisation, said a power shower lasting 10 minutes uses up 250 litres of water.

If we reduce this to four minutes, we’re saving 150 litres of water.

The charity is now offering special shower timers to people who want to reduce their showering time.

Alternatively, people can also use egg timers.

“We believe that all of us can choose to make a difference to our environment and our pockets with small, realistic changes to behaviour,” said Vanessa Moore, chief executive of Global Action Plan Ireland.

“Water is precious and our mindsets need to change.

“Part of this is being savvy with the water we use and this includes the time we take in the shower all year round.”

Green Party TD Eamon Ryan believes this is a “fantastic” initiative.

“We’re in a very tight situation with water supplies at an alltime low,” he said.

“Reducing your shower time by only a few minutes can save an incredible amount of water.

“Initiatives like this will help prevent Irish Water from cutting off our supply altogether.

“We all need to play our part,” he added.
