Who were the Anglo protagonists?
WILLIAM MCATEER – former Anglo finance director
The Tipperary native (67, inset) was convicted and sentenced to three-and-a-half years for conspiracy to defraud.
Last year, he was separately sentenced to two-and-a-half years for obtaining a fraudulent loan of €8m in 2008 as Anglo was on the brink of collapse.
As a result of the investigation undertaken by the ODCE, he was convicted on 10 counts of the provision of unlawful financial assistance.
He was also convicted, having entered a guilty plea, on one count of fraudulent trading.
PATRICK WHELAN – former director of Anglo
The 56-year-old, from Malahide, Dublin, was convicted on 10 counts of the provision of unlawful financial assistance contrary to section 60 of the Companies Act 1963 (as amended). Mr Whelan was also convicted on one count of failure to maintain a licensed bank’s register of lending to directors.
DAVID DRUMM – chief executive of Anglo
The 51-year-old, from Skerries, Co Dublin, was found guilty of false accounting and conspiracy to defraud depositors and investors. Mr Drumm, who is currently serving a six-year jail term, had been living in the US, where he endured a lengthy bankruptcy process and battle against extradition.
He pleaded guilty last month to 10 counts of authorising or permitting Anglo Irish Bank to give unlawful financial assistance for the purchase of bank shares to the ‘Maple 10’ group of developers and businessmen between July 10 and 17, 2008. Yesterday, he received a fully suspended sentence of 15 months for his role in an illegal loan scheme.
