Tough little Jimny here early next year

- Eddie Cunningham

AS we revealed here recently, Suzuki will have a new baby SUV, the Jimny, here next year.

We were surprised at the level of interest in it as gauged by the number of queries.

So as Suzuki has recently added detail to the announcement of its imminent production, here’s a few more bits of info.

There will be just the one engine – a new 1.5-litre 4cyl petrol (the old 1.3 is gone), which pumps 101bhp. Suzuki says it develops stronger torque at all revs.

There will be a 5spd manual and 4spd auto, part-time 4WD and high and low ranges.

Built on a ladder-frame chassis, the firm has bolstered rigidity with additional cross-members.

As we reported previously, current owners place more emphasis on off-road capabilities than on-road performance.

That explains why Suzuki claims the car can handle a 37deg approach and a 49deg departure angle.

Ground clearance is 210mm; it rides 20mm higher (on 15ins alloys).

The 4x4 ability is mirrored in how it looks: blocky, sturdy and chunky (length down slightly to 3,480mm).

Inside there is a 7ins touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth.

Safety equipment includes automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and traffic sign detection.

The two rear seats fold and, when prone, make for 377 litres of luggage room.

It is expected early next year.
