Ashley eyes up possible bid for Debenhams
UK HIGH-street mogul Mike Ashley is weighing up a bid for department store chain Debenhams – just days after agreeing to buy House of Fraser.
Mr Ashley controls Sports Direct, which also owns a 29.7pc stake in the stock market-listed Debenhams. That is just shy of the stake that would force him to make a bid for the firm.
The ‘Sunday Telegraph’ reported that Mr Ashley and Philip Day, the owner of the Edinburgh Woollen Mill, are separately preparing plans to buy Debenhams.
Mr Day lost out to Mr Ashley in the battle for House of Fraser.
