Daniel is crowned U13 king at Athy

LAYTOWN and Bettystown’s Daniel McKenna won the Titleist Footjoy Ireland-sponsored Leinster U13 Series atAthy.

The 11-year-old, who was playing off a handicap of nine, had 32 points to edge out eight-handicappe­r Charlie Quinn from Castle on a countback.

Mount Juliet’s Alex Cass won the nett with 45 points, while Royal Curragh’s Calum Duane took the putting title.

Set up 10 years ago to help Leinster coaches identify talent at U13 level, Gavin Moynihan was playing off five when he edged out another future Walker Cup player in Paul McBride in the inaugural event at Donabate.

Both are now playing on the Challenge Tour.
