Deasy rules in Munster

-

BANTRY Bay’s Mel Deasy (inset) made it two wins in a fornight when he added a one-over 72 to his opening 70 to win the Munster Boys U16 Amateur Open title by a shot at a windy Newcastle West.

Winner of the Munster U15 title earlier this month, he got off to a great start with a two-under-par front nine but he bogeyed the 12th and 15th to lie two behind Roganstown’s Joshua McCabe, who birdied the 11th and 15th, with three to play.

McCabe triple bogeyed the 16th, however, and bogeyed the 17th for a 73 and Deasy could afford to bogey the last and still win by one. Despite his success this year, Deasy’s performances did not earn him a spot in the six-strong GUI squad that will tee it up in the 72-hole Italian U16 Boys Championship in Biella from September 4-6. McCabe, Josh Black (Lisburn), Joseph Byrne (Baltinglass), Josh Hill (Galgorm Castle), Dylan Keating (Seapoint) and Keaton Morrison (Greenacres) got the nod to tee it up at the course where Rory McIlroy won the European Amateur title in 2006. Keating is the current Irish Under 16 Boys champion while Byrne won the U16 medal at the Irish Boys Amateur Open, finishing third.
