Ireland harnesses wave of innovation
IRELAND is now a world leader in the drive to provide clean, renewable energy for future generations.
Tánaiste Simon Coveney said Ireland should be “very proud” of the high-tech new Lir ocean energy test facility unveiled in Cork.
It aims to replicate the success of wind energy development by allowing Ireland to harness the vast potential of its coastline and oceans.
“Ireland is now a worldleader in renewable energy development and this is a remarkable facility here in Ringaskiddy,” he said.
The new Lir research facility – which boasts four giant testing tanks – is located within the €20m Beaufort complex beside the National Maritime Research College.
Infrastructure and testing systems alone at Lir cost €10m.
The cutting-edge facilities will allow the research and testing of offshore wind, wave and tidal energy devices.
The Tánaiste said: “Lir provides an invaluable resource for industry, researchers and state institutions to facilitate testing of innovative ocean energy technologies and devices for marine systems.”
