Purcell heads nine-strong GUI squad in South Africa

PORTMARNOC­K’S Conor Purcell heads a nine-strong GUI squad that will compete in two events in South Africa over the next two weeks

The recently crowned Australian Amateur champion was joined on Tuesday’s flight south by Irish Close champion Robert Cannon (Balbriggan), West of Ireland champion Robert Brazill (Naas), South of Ireland winner Caolan Rafferty (Dundalk), Alex Gleeson (Castle), Tiarnan McLarnon (Massereene), Ronan Mullarney (Galway), Mark Power (Kilkenny), and James Sugrue (Mallow).

The squad goes into action on Sunday in the South African Amateur Championsh­ip at King David Mowbray Golf Club in Cape Town (Feb 17-22) before heading east to Stellenbos­ch for the South African Amateur Stroke Play at De Zalze from February 26 to March 1.

Ireland team captain John Carroll and GUI National Coach Neil Manchip accompany the squad, who are competing under the auspices of the GUI’s High Performanc­e Programme, which is supported by Sport Ireland and Sport NI.
