STANFORD House was built in Foxrock in 1860, as part of the first wave of development to create an affluent “garden suburb” in south Dublin.

The 3,875-sq ft early Victorian pile is named after John Stanford McIlwaine, a banker with Bank of Ireland who purchased the house. His son, John Bedell Stanford McIlwaine, was a landscape painter whose own portrait was created at Stanford House by prominent Dublin artist Walter Osborne.

In May 2018, Stanford Park, a development of 15 homes, was launched on the grounds of the eponymous Stanford House, which is just off leafy Westminster Road. The period residence itself is being restored to its former glory and has been sold. The Victorian country

mansion’s tree-lined avenue now forms the entrance to Stanford Park, which is located behind the protected structure.

There are still four properties for sale at Stanford Park. Two are four-bed detached homes priced from €1.25m to €1.33m and two are three-bed semidetached houses, each with an ensuite playroom/study in the attic; they cost from €1.13m.

The facade of each home is finished in a combination of brick and dash, with a heritage-style four-panel front door.

On the ground floor, there are extrahigh ceilings and a living room with a sandstone fireplace surround, a sealed wood-burning stove, and a black marble insert and hearth. The kitchens are hand-painted and made from solid wood by Dalkey-based Kelly Design. The bespoke wardrobes were supplied by Cawley’s Furniture.
