Senior showdown gets a new date

- Dermot O’Mahony

THE Bank of Ireland Leinster Schools Senior Cup fixture between Blackrock College and St Michael’s College has been refixed for Monday, February 25.

The game will take place in Energia Park at 3pm and will be broadcast live on FreeSports.

The initial fixture was due to be played on Sunday, February 10 but was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. BOYNE face an uphill battle to maintain their Leinster League upper-tier status as they are bottom of the table on 13 points, four adrift of seventh-placed Dundalk, with three games remaining.

Tomorrow the Drogheda-based club are away to Gorey who will be intent on securing a top-four finish to seal a place in next season’s All Ireland Junior Cup, and victory here would almost cement that aim.

Enniscorthy only require a point from their final three games to secure a second Division 1A title in four years and their first opportunity to do so is at home in Ross Road tomorrow against Kilkenny.

Dundalk will be anxious to move away from the automatic relegation place at the bottom of the table and close the six-point gap to the team immediately above them, Bective Rangers, when they welcome the Dublin 4 side to Mill Road.

In the remaining game in Division 1A, third-placed Wicklow host Ashbourne at Ashtown Lane with both clubs eyeing a top-four finish.

Suttonians need a point when they visit second-placed Longford at CPL Park on Sunday to secure the Division 1B title and gain automatic promotion, while the home side will be keeping a keen eye on proceedings in Sydney Parade tomorrow evening where thirdplaced Monkstown will be hoping to put bottom club North Kildare to the sword in the battle for runners-up.

Should the visitors lose they will be automatically relegated but it’s not clear yet which of three teams in Division 2A will replace them.

Leaders Clondalkin are favourites as they travel to already-relegated New Ross before hosting Railway Union in their final match while any slip up could allow Cill Dara, away in Portlaoise, or Wexford Wanderers, at home to Mullingar to slip past.

Edenderry are Division 2B pacesetters and they travel to Birr, while waiting in the wings for any slip up are Balbriggan who will be at home to Garda on Sunday.

North Meath lead Roscrea by two points in Division 3 and with two games remaining their clash in Kells on Sunday will most likely decide the title.
