Best ways to enjoy your tunes
Time to ditch those old speakers for spanking new wireless ones? Music critic John Meagher picks three of the best for all budgets.
Sony SRS-XB10 Curry’s PC World, €44.99 (discount offer)
Sony makes excellent hardware and you get plenty of bang for your buck with this small, light and ultra-portable speaker. It’s got loads of bass making it ideal for dance music afficionados and lovers of hip-hop. It pairs with your phone’s bluetooth connection and its ideal to bring along to the park (just make sure your choice of music is on fleek!). Its dust-resistance capability means its just as comfortable outside the home as it is in it. Steam and water resistance makes it an ideal companion while you shower.
Sonos One DID Electrical, €229
The American audio company is one of the pioneers of the wireless streaming game and they make beautiful products that offer something of a design statement in your home. The One replaced the Play One entry-level model and it packs a wonderful sonic punch. They’re also best employed when paired to deliver a stereo sound. Be aware though, that they work through your home’s wi-fi system, not bluetooth, and they can be a little fiddly to set up. But at this price point the sound really is remarkable.
Naim Audio Mu-so QB NorthxSouth, €669 (on promotion)
Audiophiles have long sung the praises of this UK hi-fi manufacturer and the sound you get from this comparatively compact speaker really has to be heard to be believed. It has the capability to deliver outstanding results in large rooms although you may want to use a hi-res streaming service like Tidal to truly get the most out of this speaker. Its set-up is easy and it’s compatible with bluetooth aptX for high-quality audio. The build quality is excellent - and it looks great too.
