Mary’s craving glory once again after UCD shock

-

ST MARY’S, Belfast are now just 60 minutes away from reclaiming the Sigerson Cup after overcoming the challenge of a highly-regarded UCD side in Mallow on Saturday.

Two years after their memorable Sigerson success over the same Dublin university, the teaching training college defied their underdog status yet again and progressed into Wednesday’s decider against UCC.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be in another Sigerson Cup final and we will be doing all in our power to bring the title back to Belfast once again,” said a delighted St Mary’s manager Gavin McGilly.

St Mary’s worked their socks off throughout, evidenced by the fact that it took more than 36 minutes for UCD to register their first score.

A free from Stephen McConville got St Mary’s up and running. He would slot over further scores before the break, with fine scores from play also coming from Liam Rafferty, Jarleth Óg Burns and Ryan Coleman to lead 0-7 to 0-0 at half-time.

UCD did their best to mount a spirited fightback as efforts from Evan O’Carroll and Peter Healy saw them chip back at the deficit.

But Mary’s were not to be denied and McConville added a number of key scores to see the Belfast side home.
