Frankie to soar but Viadera can land Cairn Rouge

- Michael Verney

THERE’S only one place to start in Killarney tonight and that’s the Aherns Garage Castleisland Irish EBF Maiden (6.30) with Frankie Dettori taking his first ride at the Kerry track when partnering Dermot Weld’s Time Tunnel.

Future Derby winners Wings Of Eagles and Anthony Van Dyck both won two-year-old maidens at the track but Weld was quick to note that it would be “some achievement” if Dettori can conjure a victory coming from stall 14 of 15. The master of Rosewell House quipped that it would “almost be one of his career highlights” were she to prevail from that difficult draw while Dettori’s second mount Mujid, also for Weld, has obvious claims in the Sauternes Cup

Rated Race (7.0).

Having won his maiden here in May with a fair degree of ease before encountering traffic when unplaced at Limerick last month, the Frankel colt is a leading player and may be the one to secure Dettori a flying dismount, although John Oxx’s Highland Dress is rated a danger if showing his best.

The Listed Cairn Rouge Stakes (7.30) is the feature race on day three of the July Festival and while Dettori rides Fozzy Stack’s Lady Wannabe, it may pay to look elsewhere with Viadera appealing.

Ger Lyons’ charge had the measure of the re-opposing Lady Wannabe when scoring at the Curragh in May and is 16lbs well-in at the weights with that rival tonight, although this does look an ultracompetitive €55,000 affair.

Aidan O’Brien’s Secret Thoughts didn’t stay the longer trip when tailed off in the Cheshire Oaks and this should be more to her liking but stepping back up to a mile should make Viadera a tough nut to crack with Colin Keane on board.
